Step-by-Step CPVC Pipe Repair Guide

This step-by-step guide is designed to lead you through the essential phases of fixing leaks in CPVC pipes with precision and ease. From preparing the affected area to the final application of solvent cement, each step is crucial for a successful and lasting repair, ensuring your CPVC piping returns to its optimal functioning state.

  • Isolate and Dry: Turn off the water supply and dry the affected area thoroughly.
  • Clean the Pipe: The pipe should be clean of all dirt & debris & if the pipe surface is painted it should be scraped off with sandpaper.
  • Dry Fit: Fitting preparation should always be followed by a dry fit of pipe and fitting before applying solvent cement. It helps avoid any misfit after applying the solvent cement.
  • Cut Damaged Section: Cutter wheels and/or cutter blades should always be sharp and well-maintained. Square cuts will ensure full engagement with the fitting and maximize the bonding surface within the joint.
  • Chamfer and Deburr: Deburring is required to prepare the pipe for efficient and smooth fixing with the fitting after the application of solvent cement. In the absence of deburring the solvent cement doesn’t get uniformly & evenly spread in the jointed area. A reamer is preferred, a round filer or pocketknife may also be used. The ID and OD of the pipe should be reamed to remove burrs, filings and flares.
  • Apply Solvent Cement:
  1. One-step CPVC solvent cement is used for sizes ½” to 2” & does not require a primer
  2. Two-step solvent cement is used in pipe sizes above 2”. In 2 step process, primer is applied first followed by solvent cement.
  3. The process of primer/cleaner prepares the bonding surfaces & solvent cement helps to create a stronger bond.
  4. Apply a thin & even layer of solvent cement on the outer Diameter of the pipe & Inner Diameter of the fitting.
  5. Do not allow primer or cement to puddle in the fitting or assembly.
  • Join Pipe and Fitting: Quickly insert pipe into CPVC fitting, rotating pipe 1/4 to 1/2 turn while inserting. Once the assembly is seated and aligned hold the joint in place for 5-10 seconds. Check for even cement bead formation around the joint. This is the assurance of perfect joint.
  • Follow Manufacturer’s Guidelines: Adhere to set and cure times as recommended by the solvent cement manufacturer.

Recommendations to ensure a successful repair:

  • Apply a thin & even layer of solvent cement on the Outer Diameter of the pipe & Inner Diameter of the fitting.
  • Check for continuous bead formation of solvent cement on the joint. If the bead is not continuous, the joint may again leak after some time.
  • Wipe excess solvent cement from outside for professional appearance.
  • Do not allow puddling of excess cement inside of the system; it will damage pipe and fittings & lead to leakages.
  • Once an installation is completed & cured the system is recommended to be hydrostatically pressure tested in accordance with local codes. This ensures a leak-free system.
