How Microbial Water Contamination Happens
Biofilm forms when bacteria adheres to surfaces in an aqueous environment and begins to excrete a slimy, glue-like substance. Water treatment plants utilize chlorine and chlorine dioxide to kill this bacteria and keep water safe.
It is the chlorine that causes corrosion in certain piping materials, weakening the material and creating small gouges along the pipe’s surface.
CPVC Prevents Water Contamination
Kiwa Water Research conducted a study in which they tested 14 different materials that commonly come in contact with potable water for microbial biofilm formation. CPVC consistently tested better at preventing water contamination than other available piping materials, including green pipe (PPR).
Thanks to its higher density, CPVC effectively reduces bacterial attachment by reducing the contact area between bacteria cells and the pipe’s surface. This also helps to protect the integrity of the CPVC material from chlorine attack as well as heat and pressure. The result is a continuously smooth surface that does not allow bacteria to gain a foothold, and stands up to water purification measures.
