What is World Water Day?
World Water Day is observed on March 22 worldwide. It is a global event dedicated to raising awareness about freshwater issues and inspiring action to tackle the growing global water crisis. This year’s theme is glacier preservation, in recognition of climate change’s effect on the rapid melting of glaciers, a key source of water for agriculture, industry and human consumption.

Every year, World Water Day has focused on the vital role water plays in our lives and the urgent need to ensure clean water for all. The United Nations encourages individuals, communities, and organisations worldwide to engage in global campaigns to improve understanding of the water crisis and the urgent need for action.
As part of this commitment, FlowGuard® Plumbing Systems recognises its critical role in the plumbing industry as representatives of water safety, through its innovative materials and practices.
FlowGuard CPVC and Safe Water
FlowGuard Plumbing Systems technology is not just about meeting plumbing needs; it's about safeguarding health and ensuring access to clean water. FlowGuard CPVC (Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride) pipes offer critical advantages in maintaining the integrity of water supplies due to their unique properties.
Biofilm Resistance and Safe Water
FlowGuard CPVC effectively minimises biofilm formation, which can harbor harmful bacteria and compromise water quality. The unique surface properties of FlowGuard CPVC create an environment where bacteria are less likely to adhere, supporting and helping to maintain a healthier water supply.
Chlorine Resistance and Safe Water
FlowGuard CPVC has remarkable immunity to degradation caused by chlorine and chlorine dioxide. This resistance not only prevents corrosion of the piping but also enhances the longevity of plumbing systems. This is how FlowGuard CPVC ensures long-term reliability and performance, further supporting the purity and safety of the water delivered through these systems.

Safe Plumbing and Safe Water
FlowGuard CPVC water pipes are joined using a simple solvent cement system that requires minimal tools, eliminating the hazards associated with alternative systems, such as heat fusion. This installation technique allows for a molecular bond between pipes and fittings, creating strong plumbing systems.
Material Strength and Safe Water
The material strength of FlowGuard CPVC plays a critical role in maintaining the safety and efficiency of plumbing systems. It is designed to withstand high temperatures and pressure, making it suitable for demanding needs.

Safe Buildings and Safe Water
FlowGuard CPVC’s Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) of 60% means it needs a much higher oxygen concentration to sustain combustion, making it a safe choice for installations in residential and commercial buildings. The material chars when exposed to fire, forming an insulating layer that protects its inner structure, thus enabling continued water supply during emergencies where fire safety is paramount.
FlowGuard Plumbing Systems and Flo-Tek in Action: Botswana
The Challenge
In Botswana, the issue of inadequate plumbing and water systems in two schools perfectly highlights the importance of water safety and accessibility.
Bokamoso Secondary school is situated in a low-income suburb and faces overcrowding issues, requiring a split schedule for older and younger children due to limited classroom space.

“The flow of water from government pipes is the best way of using water because there's no way that you will close the school because there is nothing to use or the project is not running because there's no water.
The only challenge is when those pipes have a problem or there's a leakage somewhere and then we have to close the whole school.”

Goodhope Primary School serves both regular students and those with learning disabilities, aiming to create a safe, age-appropriate learning environment through the construction of specialised classrooms, which are currently under construction.
To address the unique needs of each school and its staff and students, urgent improvements to water distribution were needed.
The Solution
FlowGuard Plumbing Systems, in partnership with Flo Tek, stepped up to address these challenges by donating essential plumbing improvements to both schools.
For Bokamoso Secondary School, FlowGuard provided crucial piping systems and storage tanks that support the installation of a safe water supply for students.

“During winter the pipes bust. Normally at times we come here, we are told that there's a pipe problem somewhere and then we have to return the students because we can't have over 1,000 students here with no water and over 90 members of staff. So we were forced to close the school on such days.
But since we had the tanks from FloTek we are able to use the stored water and then the school runs smoothly irrespective of the problems that we have from the main line.”

For Goodhope Primary School, the donation included plumbing necessary for facilities that cater to children with learning disabilities, ensuring proper sanitation and hygiene are met within educational settings.
By using FlowGuard CPVC technology, these schools can ensure that the water supply remains uncontaminated and safe for consumption, creating a healthier learning environment.
