Is CPVC UV Resistant?
-
UV radiation can damage certain thermoplastic piping materials by promoting the formation of harmful free radicals, which leads to the failure of the system.
-
FlowGuard® CPVC demonstrates notable CPVC UV resistance, making it durable under UV exposure compared to materials like PPR.
-
Precautionary measures are recommended for storing CPVC to retain its integrity before installation, despite its inherent CPVC UV resistance afterwards.
Effects of UV Light on Thermoplastics Like PPR
For materials such as polypropylene (PPR), susceptibility to UV damage is notably high due to its molecular composition. Over time, even though the degradation might not be immediately visible, such microscopic damages can culminate in leaks and premature system failure.
Conversely, research from the Mechanical Engineering Department at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals has shown that CPVC manifests significantly better UV resistance. This study tested CPVC pipe samples under the harsh UV exposure conditions typical in Saudi Arabia. After nine months, the primary effect of UV on CPVC was a slight discoloration—a normal aspect of weathering that does not compromise the pipe's structural integrity or functionality.
FlowGuard CPVC's UV Resistance
FlowGuard CPVC is inherently more resistant to UV-induced degradation than PPR. Furthermore, FlowGuard CPVC incorporates UV-blocking additives such as carbon black and titanium dioxide into its composition, enhancing its CPVC UV resistance. These additives are well-regarded for their efficacy in protecting materials from UV harm.
Despite the robust CPVC UV resistance of FlowGuard CPVC, it is still recommended to minimise its direct exposure to UV rays both before and during construction. Protective measures, such as covering the pipes with non-transparent tarps or storing them in shaded areas, are advised. Ideally, CPVC piping should not be brought onsite until it is ready to be installed, which helps preserve the material’s resilience through the handling and installation phases.
FlowGuard CPVC's enhanced CPVC UV resistance offers a reliable solution for plumbing systems in environments exposed to significant sunlight. To maintain the highest level of material performance, appropriate storage practices are crucial.
